A Voyage to Heavnly Canaan
A Voyage to Heavnly Canaan
Man like a Ship by wind and weather tost
Would fain double this Cape, attain that Coast
Wher Happines abids, til Running neer
Two Rocks of Equall Danger both appeer
Presumption, and Dispair, the One pleads This
I have done well, nor ever steerd amiss
The other deviating too far, implies
Ther's no help left to salve its Miseries
And through This Bosphorus our sayles make way
Til Anker of Hope let downe we cry belay:
In steps the Pylot then to Consolate
Our sad Condition, proves our Advocate
To's Father for Remission of our Crimes
Pleads the Corruption of our Natures, Times
And All things else betray us to this Evil
The worlds Deceipts, the Fleshes, and the Divel
And by His praier and Sacrefize alone
Offers Himself Propitiation
For All our sinns: Let not Despaire prevaile
To make us take in This or t'other sayle
In Christian Duties, Nor presume so much
That what we doe can merit, or bear touch
With what we should doe: but with Fear Confess
How much His Suffrings shrink performance less
On our side: And Salvation worke out
With Trembling Care until we bring't about
To Comfort those that Assurances may guive
That in and through His merits we shall live
Mauger All storms and at the last posess
Through Faith in Him the Haven of Happines.
