Wren and Man

What does it mean to call oneself a man,
As though to no one else the name applied?
I tried to think. Before my thoughts began
Some voice quite unexpectedly replied —
" This afternoon, as you remember, came
And flew around your room a Jennie Wren . . .
Not till that nimble creature knows its name
Will you have learnt your meaning among men."
