To a Young Gentleman Return'd from Abroad

Restor'd to our desiring Eyes,
Chear'd by the Pleasures you infuse,
Let my glad Thoughts exulting rise.
And bring a Welcome from the Muse .

As yet a Mother 's fondest Love
Prints on thy Cheek its tender Seal,
Her eager Eyes unweary'd rove,
Till Tears her inward Transport tell.

Till the dread Ocean safe resign'd
Thee , dear Reviver of her Ease,
Rude seem'd the Zephyr 's gentlest Wind,
Too loud the whisp'ring Summer Breeze .

Thy Sire with kind-receiving Arms
Enfolds thee in a close Embrace,
Pleas'd to behold her softer Charms
Resembled in thy manly Face .

Upheld by his obliging Hand,
Fain wou'd the Muse his Favours own;
O! may his lovely Virtues stand
A Pattern for th' engaging Son!

Lo! where his younger Hope appears!
Bless, Heav'n, the dear deserving Youth!
Companion of thy growing Years,
And Partner of thy native Truth .

A useful Life , a virtuous Name ,
Shall kindly bless the ripen'd Pair,
Prolong their Date, advance their Fame,
And crown the happy Parents Care.
