From a Young Woman to an Old Officer Who Courted Her

Dear Colonel, name the day,
Let your love no longer stay with a fal la la.
The battles you have won
Have my tender heart undone with a fal la la.

Oh! think no more of wars
You'll get nothing there but scars with a fal la la.
But fly into my arms
As a shelter from all harms with a fal la la.

Though you have got the gout,
Yet your heart is very stout with a fal la la —
You can sit in elbow-chair,
I can nurse you with great care with a fal la la.

I can patch your old red clothes,
I can darn your old yarn hose with a fal la la.
Still listening with delight,
While you brag of former fight with a fal la la.

And when you chance to die,
As in dust we all must lie with a fal la la —
It shall be my special care
My loss quickly to repair with a fal la la.
