Accomplishment
Roebling, his life and mind reprieved enough,
would, telescope in trembling hands, determine
that his plans were followed faultlessly:
from rise of granite towers
to the final set of trusses and wind stays.
He would see his work accomplished —
the Bridge:
road enough to let strayed Brooklynites
escape to their spired city,
enough to rid that domain of the abominable
who, her guards relaxed, had infiltrated —
the Strut:
compressed bands of iron muscle,
proof to storm and tide, forever more
to keep New York apart from Brooklyn's shore.
To the spirit of the Roeblings' glorious intent
the bridge is everlasting monument.
