It Whispered Boo

It feasted on children
because children believed It could.

Adults, in their haughtiness,
only believe in themselves—
concrete and rigid
is their cage.

But the infrastructure of their security
is founded less on steel beams
and more on the backs of 401(k)s.

…And yet, even the greatest skyscrapers fold.

Not when you smash them with bats
or strike them with stones,
but trace back the missiles
to their propagater—
and you’ll find vocal flaps wringing
in reverberating waves.

The secret is,
it doesn’t matter what was said,
so long as what they heard,
was boo.
