Love Poem
Today you read me a love poem
One you had written
It was in Shakespearean language
Each word taking up its own moment
But in that moment
When you spoke
I couldn’t help but wish you weren’t reading
To me but for me
Because of me
Because I am all that you could think of when your professor said to write about love
Because each time you began a line, your mind drifted to me
Because you didn’t know where to begin, so you started at poetry
Because you knew that I would understand
I understand that this is an assignment
I understand that the lines came clear and clean, no hesitation
I understand that there is nothing to begin, and no place to start
I understand that you will never understand
Today I wrote a love poem
One written to you
It wasn’t quite Shakespeare
But each word shares our moment, a figment of me and you
