The Pines

by Didi C.

A stranger in a land of pine,
I’m getting to know my neighbors,
Gentle Jeffrey and Prickly Ponderosa.
As I work, sleep, putter, and play,
they mostly keep to themselves:
gently swaying,
silently sowing,
occasionally shedding
needles they no longer have use for.
Study their skin long enough and
you’ll find a kaleidoscope of eyes –
a thousand thousand-yard stares
stretching across time,
in all directions.
