Surrealism Is

Surrealism is the brush that
paints without a hand,
the sound of unseen birds
cawing in the empty air,
dead fish returning to
swim the ocean currents.

Surrealism is the knife that
cuts to the quick of sensation,
the softly bleeding edge,
the first sleep slanted
moment of morning.

Surrealism speaks to
the incarcerated self,
the crush of territorial decrees,
the obscene exaggerations
of everyday obeisance.

Surrealism is the thought
that hides behind thought,
a slip of the tongue,
the caress and burn
of sand upon stone,
the intrepid pun
you only grasp
in the lucid moments
of visionary dreams.
