The Things That Fall

A leaf,
though it dances
and plays in the wind,
is well aware
it cannot swim
forever.
It may be
light
and whimsical,
but a leaf
is one of
the things that fall.

A bird,
though it harness
the power of flight,
can sing its song only
a number of times.
It may fly
higher
than any and all,
but a bird
is one of
the things that fall.

A bridge,
though it carry
magnificent weight,
knows far too well
there will come a day
it can bear its load
no longer.
It may be firm
and standing tall,
but a bridge
is one of
the things that fall.

A city,
though today
it may prosper and shine,
foresees the demise
of its greatest designs.
It may labor and toil in vain
to forestall,
but a city
is one of
the things that fall.

Love,
though it fills us
with hope and delight,
knows it must one day
dissolve into night.
It may be the deepest
most powerful
feeling of all,
but love
is one of
the things that fall.
