So here they are, her blank arm around her mother's
trembling blue cardigan, describing watercolors and
reading out snippets of artist statements: conveying
a sense of movement, representing the spiritual confusion
of this modern age; her mother's head slumps forward,
her eyes near-closed to the fluorescents, her memories
swimming through her, as distant, perhaps inviolable,
as she will ever be; and she stifles a sigh as she says
which one was your favorite? Which did you remember the best?
