Words Like Waves

I decided to write you a love letter,
Because I know you’re a hopeless romantic.
I made words appear prettier than they are,
Like I do to myself before I see you.
I compared my feelings to a rogue wave,
Because it seemed poetic enough to impress you.
I used a typewriter so it would look authentic,
But the ream of paper in my waste bin revealed the truth.
I stayed up all night swimming through metaphors,
My thoughts drowned in a sea of pretentiousness.
I told you about my cyan colored sins,
But painted them a calming shade of teal.
I wanted to make a splash in your cool blue eyes,
But fear kept my feelings on the ocean floor.
I decided to give you this poem instead,
Because I’m a hopeful romantic.
