On the Charlie So Long

1

On a Monday morning it began to rain,
Around the bend come a passenger train;
On the bumpers was an old Jimmie Jones,
He's a good old porter but he's dead and gone;
Dead and gone, dead and gone,
'Case he been on the Charlie so long.

Joseph Mickle was a good engineer,
Told the fireman never to fear;
All he wanted was to get her good and hot,
" We'll make Paris 'bout four o'clock,
'Bout four o'clock, 'bout four o'clock,
'Case we been on the Charlie so long. "

Jay Gould's Daughter

On a Monday mornin' it began to rain;
Aroun' the bend come a passenger train.
On the bumpers was a hobo John;
He's a good old hobo, but he's dead and gone.
Dead and gone, dead and gone,
He's a good old hobo, but he's dead and gone.

Charley Snyder was a good engineer,
He told his fireman not to fear,
All he needed was water and coal;
Put your head out the window, see the drivers roll,
See the drivers roll, see the drivers roll,

Old Log House

On a little green knoll
At the edge of the wood
My great great grandmother's
First house stood.

The house was of logs
My grandmother said
With one big room
And a lean-to shed.

The logs were cut
And the house was raised
By pioneer men
In the olden days.

I like to hear
My grandmother tell
How they built the fireplace
And dug the well.

They split the shingles;
They filled each chink;
It's a house of which
I like to think.

Forever and ever
I wish I could
Live in a house

Omnia Somnia

Go, silly worm, drudge, trudge, and travel,
Despising pain,
So thou may'st gain
Some honour, or some golden gravel:
But Death the while (to fill his number)
With sudden call
Takes thee from all,
To prove thy days but dream and slumber.

Omnes Gentes Plaudite!

Omnes gentes plaudite,
I saw many birds sitting on a tree;
They took their flight and flew away,
With, Ego dixi , have good day!
Many white feathers hath the pie —
I may no more sing, my lips are so dry.
Many white feathers hath the swan —
The more that I drink, the less good I can.
Lay sticks on the fire, well may it burn;
Give us once to drink ere away we turn.

A Song on the South Sea

Ombre and basset laid aside,
New games employ the fair;
And brokers all those hours divide
Which lovers used to share.

The court, the park, the foreign song
And harlequin's grimace
Forlorn; amidst the city throng
Behold each blooming face.

With Jews and Gentiles undismayed
Young tender virgins mix;
Of whiskers nor of beards afraid,
Nor all the cozening tricks.

Bright jewels, polished once to deck
The fair one's rising breast,
Or sparkle round her ivory neck,
Lie pawned in iron chest.

The Crystal

O LYMPIAN sunlight is the Poet's sphere;
Yet of his rapt unconscious thought at play
The wintry stream gave image but to-day,
When first the frost his magic made appear;
The darkling water dreamed, and mirrored clear,
A thousand miles adown, the clouds' array,
Nor any gleam or stirring did betray
The secret of the transformation near —
When, lo! what beauty flashing from the night
Of formless atoms! Nature stirs amain,
Building her crystal arches firm and well,
And framing fairy cantilevers bright.
So broods the vision in the Poet's brain,

The Old Year

The Old Year's gone away
To nothingness and night;
We cannot find him all the day
Nor hear him in the night:
He left no footstep, mark or place
In either shade or sun:
The last year he'd a neighbour's face,
In this he's known by none.

All nothing everywhere:
Mists we on mornings see
Have more of substance when they're here
And more of form than he.
He was a friend by every fire,
In every cot and hall--
A guest to every heart's desire,
And now he's nought at all.

Old papers thrown away,
Old garments cast aside,

Farewell and Hail!

Old Year, going, take with you
All our failures, sorrows, too;
Memories of bitter years,
Old regrets and futile tears;
Fret and envy, greed and spite —
Take them with you, pray, tonight.
Pride too lofty, dreams too crude,
Hate, with all its venomed brood,
Discontent, our subtle foe —
Old Year, take them, as you go.

New Year, bright as dawning youth,
Bring us faith and love of truth,
Kindly thoughts of one and all,
Charity for those who fall,
Strength to help and zest to cheer,
Hope to banish doubt and fear.
