Souvenir de Voyage

We came this way together—
How many a year ago!—
And, fair or stormy weather,
Our hearts were still aglow.
For Time had not bereft us
Of what our Youth had left us
And Life was at the flow.

Wherever Beauty beckoned
We followed to the goal,
And fleeting days were reckoned
By what Joy took of toll.
We shared the Old World's glory,
And pondered myth and story
Together, soul to soul.

Alone, I greet the places
Where most we loved to dwell
That, like the fondest faces,
Can never lose their spell.
How can my way be lonely,
Dear Comrade, if thou only
Rememberest as well?
