The Negro's Description of the Hog
Massa Hog de only gentleman,
Dat live in Scotia isle;
Him valk about, him grunt and eat,
But him not need to toil:
Him no like dog dat has to bark,
And vatch hims massa's gate;
Or hunt de fowl, or chase de sheep,
Ah! no, him mucher great.
Him no like hen dat lays de egg,
To massa in de morn;
Nor like de little bird dat build
Hims nest upon de torne:—
Him no like cow dat give de cream
To massa's misses' tea;
Nor like de pouse, dat catch de mouse,
Cause him eats all him see.
Him no like horse dat draw de plough,
And hurl hims massa's cart;
Nor like de slave dat drive him horse,
With sore and heavy heart.
No,—him de only gentleman,

Him valk about with him short tail,
But him not tink to toil.
