Light of my Life

Light of my life and Comforter divine,
Be thou my stay;
In danger shield me and in darkness shine
Upon my way.
When tempest toss'd and sinking, rescue me,
As thou did'st Peter on the stormy sea.
'Twas hard at first to bear thy chast'ning rod,
And bend my will,
But now I calmly lean on thee, my God,
In good and ill;
Bright hopes must fade and cherished projects die,
That earth-born souls may nestle in the sky.
Henceforth I consecrate to thee my love,
Saviour divine,
My chastened soul seeks fellowship above,
Kindred of thine,
With equal joy I take whate'er is giv'n,
The less of earth, the more I have of heav'n.
Light of my life, arise! celestial dawn,
Now shine within!
Illume the heart which thou hast fully won,
Let heav'n begin.
Then will I give thee songs, e'en in the night,
And joyfully await the morning light.
