The Torch

If I should not possess the wealth of kings,
Nor ever don the ermine monarchs wore,
I shall not sigh, but play the minstrel's rôle,
And ask of life no more.

For if my singing torch brings faith renewed
To them that struggle upward in the night,
I shall not deem the hand of fate unkind
That gave me lamps to light!
