Soliloquy of the Returned Gold Adventurer
Been to Pike's Peak, lost all my dimes,
And for a week had “darn'd hard times”
Hunting for gold, 'mong rocks and hills,
Catching a cold, the fever and chills.
Got mighty sick—felt very sad,
Stung to the quick, times were so bad;
Money all spent, worn out my shoes,
Clothing all rent—I had the blues:
Got in the lurch—my spirits down,
Gave up the search, came back to town,
Footsore, weary, hungry, spleeny,
Heartsick, dreary, and ———greeny
To leave mother, a pleasant home,
And a dear brother, away to roam,
'Mong mountains rough, for golden ore:
I've had enough and nevermore
From mother's side, westward to stray,
What e'er betide there will I stay
Under her care; plenty to eat,
Clothing to wear that can't be beat:
Broadcloth, doeskin, bootees from bossy,
Beaver and satin, gloves soft and glossy:
I'll sport some curls, moustache and canes,
Loved by the girls, I'll take some pains
To cut a swell, be very nice,
Can do it well, just like a mice;
I'll cut a dash, take rustic down,
Spend mother's cash, surprise the town,
Make time my toy, ne'er have a care,
Be a wild boy and beau the fair.
And for a week had “darn'd hard times”
Hunting for gold, 'mong rocks and hills,
Catching a cold, the fever and chills.
