The Rambling Boy

I am a wild and wicked youth,
I love young women and that's the truth,
I love them dearly and I love them well,
I love them better than tongue can tell.

In my seventeen I took a wife,
I loved her dearly as my life,
And to maintain her both well and gay
Robbing went I on the highway.

So when my money was getting low
On the highway I was forced to go,
A-robbing lords and ladies bright
And brought the gold to my heart's delight.

I robbed Lord Sandford I do declare,
And Lady Marmion in New Year's Square.
I shut the shutters, bid them goodnight
And away I went to my heart's delight.

My old mammy and my daddy too,
Affection told me it will never do,
I will not listen to what they say
But still go on my own wicked way.

When I am dead and in my grave
A decent funeral pray let me have,
Six highwaymen for to carry me,
Give them bright swords for their liberty.

Six blooming girls for to bear my pall,
Give them white gloves and pink ribbons all,
And when I'm dead they'll tell the truth:
There go a wild and wicked youth.
