The Christmas Tree

With spangles gay and candle light
And many toys, our tree is bright.
And gold and silver birds are there:
While over all there hangs a star.

The toys are given first of all.
For me a doll, for Hugh a ball.
The spangle stuff is pulled about.
The candles are then all put out.

The tree now strip't is dark and bare,
But still the star is shining there
As shone the star the shepherds saw,
Who heard the angels' song of yore.

The star that was a guiding light,
To kings and shepherds, through the night,
Where patient oxen calm and mild,
Shared their bed with Mary's child.

Christmas night is our Saviour's birth.
Joy in heaven, and peace on earth.
This was the story Mummy told me,
As she hung the star in our Christmas tree.
