To a Friend
A moment gone and earth and sky
Seemed dree-toned by a death grey dye,
Sweet peace had gone, nor would joy stay,
And dread at night close with me lay.
Hope, once so fair, now passed me by,
Nor heeded my starved heart's low cry.
Dark haunting dreams my nights oppressed,
And brooding fears my mind obsessed.
A cheery word, as you passed by,
And all the dark clouds left life's sky,
To let the golden sunlight through
From placid skies of pastel blue.
Oh, friend of mine, doth it not show
The transience of all earthly woe?
Seemed dree-toned by a death grey dye,
Sweet peace had gone, nor would joy stay,
And dread at night close with me lay.
Hope, once so fair, now passed me by,
Nor heeded my starved heart's low cry.
Dark haunting dreams my nights oppressed,
And brooding fears my mind obsessed.
A cheery word, as you passed by,
And all the dark clouds left life's sky,
To let the golden sunlight through
From placid skies of pastel blue.
Oh, friend of mine, doth it not show
The transience of all earthly woe?
