Sound, a Phantasy

As a child I heard crickets in a hedge,
Remote and faint, that made an elfin sound.
Into the measureless sky, heaved ledge on ledge,
The city climbs; its mingled cries rebound
From earth to heaven, and then they fall away
Before the diapasons of the sea
Shaking the solid globe, as, night and day,
It sweeps gigantic lyres of psalmody:
Seas, forests, cities, — in a blended cry
The voice of earth goes up into the sky...
Where, as I leaned once from a window ledge,
Chaos stoops over from the last star's bound
And hears small worlds in starry hedge on hedge,
Remote and faint, that make an elfin sound.
