A Thousand Deaths

A thousand things my soul has wrought
Lie broken in my soul to-day;
A thousand things my mind has thought
Now slowly in my mind decay;
A thousand lives have come to nought,
A thousand selves have passed away.

A thousand deaths my soul has died
By its own growing sloughed and slain:
A thousand loves my heart has tried,
And every love has been in vain,
And thrice denied and crucified,
Has hung upon a cross of pain.

A thousand deaths! a thousand lives!
From life, through death, to life I go;
The outlived lives I burst like gyves;
Each death a larger life I know;
I die , and yet my soul survives;
I die , and yet by dying grow.
