Impromptu Written with a Pencil in a Chinese Temple in the Garden of Mr Elisha Boudinot

What rural beauties deck this charming seat
As if the powers of fancy had employd
The woodland Nymphs their purpose to compleat
And Flora with her flowry train decoyd
The verdant margin of each gay patterre
Blends such a blaze of beauty on my Sight
The blushing rose the towering lilly fair
The Jasmine sweet the stock and wall flowr bright
While fruits and plants wafted from southern shores
Nicely arrangd in order here are seen
The eglantine embracing all the bowers
Pours scents ambrosial on the varied scene
Nor beauty only — usefulness combin'd
In wholsome vegetables are displayd
An Emblem suited to the owners mind
Who benefits mankind without parade
Thus mighty Romes fam'd orators of old
Could quit the Forum for the Sabine field
With their own hands the spade and plough could hold
And make their gardens every Comfort yield
Long may you thus your leisure hours employ
May rural plenty on your board be spread
And with your portia taste the hights of Joy
And your sweet plants like Myrtles crown your head
