Dupin and Sherlock Holmes — what arrowed minds
To pierce the veil of hidden crime are these!
Yet where is he who swift solution finds
To nature's old elusive mysteries?

So Fiction's seers, ingenious as they are,
Ponder in vain what simple things disclose;
Superb detectives, baffled by a star,
Or mute before the riddle of the rose!
