To Mr John Banks, Author of Miscellany Poems
L ov'd and unblemish'd wear thy purchas'd Bays ;
Unhurt by Censure , as unswell'd by Praise .
All Themes you reach in your extensive Vein ,
With Sense instruct, with Humour entertain;
Not sunk when low , not clouded when you soar ,
In Fancy much you please, in Judgment more.
Bless'd with Conception clear, Expression strong,
Like Prose you reason, while you charm in Song ,
Of Genius both Extreams your Lays impart,
Labour with Ease , and Negligence with Art .
O live, with vary'd Strains our Breasts to move;
What Youth so well has learn'd, let Years improve.
I, tho' of Hope forlorn , with Griefs deprest ,
In Life's cross Maze far wilder'd , long unblest ,
(Cheer'd yet a while , thy wish'd Success to see)
In Woes can feel one generous Joy for Thee .
With happier Bards I press to greet thy Fame,
Pleas'd in the Number to enlist my Name.
Unturn'd to judge, unskilful to commend,
An artless Critic , but a willing Friend .
Unhurt by Censure , as unswell'd by Praise .
