75

Upon this Sabbath day
I dream of summer Sabbaths long ago,
Far oh! so far away—
Ere hope died out and doubt had time to grow.

We sought the small white church, my mother and l—
The heath stretched green and wide:
We walked on side by side:
Above us burned the cloudless summer sky.

All was so perfect then,
So joyous and complete;—
God, was it well to make those days so sweet
If that pure joy can ne'er be ours again?
