Against the Rage of Duelling

Sword of Religion, the defence of right ,
The Patriot's courage, and the Hero's might,
Why dost thou waste those precious drops of life
In savage feuds of despicable strife?

No lion against lion arm'd we find,
Against the tiger they are friends combin'd:
Is man for shadows, and with man, to fight —
Mercy his hope, divinity his right?

Perish, who first the polish'd murder claim'd,
With Honour's plea by counterfeits defam'd!
Thee to the rape of Passion Folly bore!
The name of courage prostitute no more!
