August

Colin, Hobbinol and Piers,
Cuddie sitting on the ground;
Hobbinol his pipes resound,
To delight his fellows' ears.

" Sing us somewhat, Colin Clout, "
(Cuddie quote), " to banish sleep;
" And to soothe the waking sheep,
" Let it not be overloud. "

" Piers and Cuddie " ( Colin quote),
" Sing we each, to one same strain,
" Yon star in the starry main,
" Floating like a pretty boat. "

Hobbinol a gentle riot
Waked upon his several reeds
Colin singeth, when he heeds
How the pipe is loud and quiet:

Yon is not a common star
Like the other stars in Heaven
Lo, it walks among the seven
Stars to north which make the share.

By the watchful light it gives,
By its steadfast, golden dower,
I divine this very hour,
That a famous Shepherd lives.

Cuddie now assumed the song;
Singeth: I be half afraid;
Knoweth not unto what grade,
Yon bright portent may belong

By its light somewhat increased,
I divine a Babe is born,
Somewhere now, twixt dusk and morn,
Which shall be a famous Priest.

Greater yet (quote Piers ) I sing
Whom ye Priest and Shepherd call.
He, most glorious over all,
Is a Prophet and a King.

Quote the pipe: Let praise Him then,
Set, a Hero, in the sky.
Glory be to God on high,
Peace on earth to honest men.
