Bricklayer Love

I thought of killing myself because I am only a bricklayer
and you a woman who loves the man who runs a drug store.

I don't care like I used to; I lay bricks straighter than I
used to and I sing slower handling the trowel afternoons.

When the sun is in my eyes and the ladders are shaky and the
mortar boards go wrong, I think of you.

Nice little poem. The real twist, the real emotion is in the last line. This romantic 'I think of you' is nicely timed and contrasts perfectly with the image of the tough yet simple bricklayer who just lays his bricks straighter and sings slower than he is used to, because the women who has his heart, is in love with the drug store owner. There is definitely comedy in this poem (just read the first line again), and that comedy is what makes this poem so nice and bearable.
Heaven knows there have been many poems written about love. But how many about Bricklayer Love? And how many of those are both funny and moving?
Right. One.
