The Call

“Good-bye my girl! I go to-night,
With allied braves to stand,
I took ‘the call’ and mean to fight
For Father's native land.

He did his bit among the Boers
And ranked amongst the best,
But still ‘the call’ his heart allures,
Though old wounds bar the test.

He's talked to me the war about,
With eyes of fervent glow,
Depicting foes in glorious rout
Till every pulse beats ‘go!’

Train well the boy with sword and drum
And toy artillery,
And when I'm old, should foeman come,
He'll take ‘the call’ for me.”
