Canso Strait

1. Home-ward bound and ready for sea, Our drunken captain got
on a spree. He came on board, and to us did say: “Get your
anchor, boys, and fill her away!” 2. We had to go by
his command; With full sail set we left the land. We
left Sand Point upon our lee, As we stood out 'gainst a head-beat sea.

3 The vessel goes on with a jerk and a splash,
And the green seas o'er her deck do wash.
The vessel goes down to her fore half mast,
When the sailors think she is sinking fast.

4 We asked him kindly to shorten sail
Or we'd be lost in the heavy gale.
He cursed and swore that the wind might blow,
He would show us how his boat could go.

5 The wind does roar and the seas break high,
But on and on our gallant ship does fly.
But if I arrive safe home, no more will I sail
With a drunken captain in a heavy gale!
