Down by the Riverside
As I walked one May morning
Down by the river side,
I heard a couple discoursing
Which filled my heart with pride.
" Come sing to me another song
And my bride you shall be."
" Kind sir," she said, " I'm yet too young
Your bride for to be."
" The younger you are the better for me,
The fitter to be my bride,
And perhaps that I might say some day
I married my wife a maid."
He kissed her and he courted her
Till he gained the will of her,
And soon as he gained the will of her
He stole her maidenhead.
The grass was wet and slippery
And both her feet did slide,
They both fell down together
Down by the river side.
" Since you have had your will of me
Pray tell to me your name,
That when my pretty babe is born
I may call it the same."
" My name is Captain Thunderbolt,
To you I'll never marry;
I'm wed to a glazier's daughter dear
Down by the river side."
" This is not what you promised me
Down by the river side.
You promised that you'd marry me,
Make me your lawful bride."
" If I promised that I'd marry you
'Tis more than I would do.
For I never intend to wed a girl
So easy found as you."
" It's of the farmer's daughters
To market they may go,
While I poor girl must stop at home
And rock the cradle o'er.
" And rock the cradle o'er and o'er
And sing sweet lullaby.
Was there ever poor girl in all the town
So crossed in love as I?"
Down by the river side,
I heard a couple discoursing
Which filled my heart with pride.
" Come sing to me another song
And my bride you shall be."
