On Elizabeth Vaughan, a Good-Hearted and Pleasant Old Woman

A GOOD-HEARTED AND PLEASANT OLD WOMAN .

R EVERE and bless, whoe'er thou art,
If thine is Friendship's glowing heart,
The shade that 's consecrated here,
And spare to memory a tear!

I ask of thee no cultur'd mind,
Or sense profound, or wit refin'd,
But simple Nature's cheering smile,
And Love that 's innocent of guile.

The social temper's vernal ray,
That gleams upon the Winter's day;
Religion of no gloomy sect,
The manners free, the life correct.

If thou canst bring me gifts like these ,
I care not who can others please:
Nor Muse nor Genius I implore —
Her gentle spirit claims no more.
