Engrossment
To-day I saw two Swans of equal height
pilastered upward from a lake together,
Breast against breast and bill distending bill.
The winds which breathed from eastward white and chill
A moment ruffled wave and ruffled feather;
their moony plumage melted in the light
Like clouds they moved together unconfined,
twin wills transported by one even mind.
Where London's bloodless and unnatural claws
relax from Mother Nature whom it rapes,
Where common lands plead ancient right for pause,
two swans explored the heaven of their shapes.
And I, when I observe you up and down,
seem freed a moment, and there is no Town.
