Farewell to England

Farewell false friends, farewell ill wine,
Farewell all women with design,
Farewell all pretty cheating pranks,
Farewell lotteries, farewell banks;
And England, I in leaving thee
May say farewell to poverty.
Adieu! where'er I go, I'm sure to find
Nothing so ill as that I leave behind.

Farewell a nation without sense,
Farewell Exchequer without pence,
Farewell army with bare feet,
Farewell navy without meat,
Farewell writing, fighting, beaus,
And farewell useless Plenipo's.
Adieu! etc.

Farewell you Good Old Cause promoters,
Farewell bribed military voters,
Farewell to all attainting bills,
And record which for witness kills;
Farewell to laymen's villainy,
And farewell churchmen's perjury.
Adieu! etc.

Instead of one king, farewell nine,
And all who Association sign;
Farewell you gulled unthinking fops,
Poor broken merchants, empty shops,
Farewell packed juries, culled for blood,
With eight years' war for England's good.
Adieu! etc.

Farewell you judges, who dispense
With perjured cutthroat evidence;
Farewell thou haughty little Mouse,
With those that chose thee for the House;
Farewell long nose and spiteful looks
With Reverend Oates and all his books.
Adieu! etc.

Adieu once more Britannia! fare thee well.
And if all this won't mend thee,
May the Dutch triumph in your spoil,
May beggary run throughout your isle,
And no one think it worth his while
To take up to defend thee.
