The Fatalist and The Sailorman
Said the Fatalist to the Sailorman
" Vain are your efforts, vain,
To cross the windswept main,
For the wind blows where it listeth
And drives you forward and back,
You are but a chip that twisteth
Among currents strong and black
The wind is the breath of Fate —
Lie in your berth and wait. "
Said the Sailorman to the Fatalist
" You're right about the wind,
But why should I stay behind?
The wind blows where it listeth
To drive me forward or back,
But the art of sailing consisteth
Largely in learning to tack
Why should I loaf and wait?
I know how to tack, on Fate! "
