The Following Epitaph, Written at the Request of Miss E. Owen

WRITTEN AT THE REQUEST OF MISS E. OWEN, IS ENGRAVED UPON A HANDSOME MONUMENT IN ST. THOMAS'S CHURCH, HAVERFORD WEST .

TO THE MEMORY

Of Mrs. Elizabeth Elliot, relict of Alexander Elliot, Esq. of Eareweare, in the county of Pembroke, and daughter of John Barlow, Esq. of Lawrenny, in the same county, who died the 18th of May, 1780, aged sixty-six. This Monument was erected by Miss. Elizabeth Owen, in testimony of the tender affection she bore her much-lamented Aunt .

O H ! thou whose feet this hallow'd pavement tread,
From life's tumultuous scenes awhile retir'd,
To seek the peaceful mansions of the dead,
With tender or religious thoughts inspir'd;

If e'er the sympathy of soul was thine,
If e'er thy bosom heav'd at others' woe;
Stranger approach this monumental shrine,
And let the tears of pity gently flow!

Within this tomb a female form is laid,
Whose virtuous spirit sought its kindred sky —
Accept this off'ring, dear departed shade!
A niece's tribute, and a stranger's sigh.

Through ev'ry station of her blameless life,
From early youth to ever-honour'd age;
The cheerful friend, kind mistress, tender wife,
All praise might challenge, and all hearts engage.

As some memorial of her well spent days,
Her more than daughter placed this modest stone;
The child of gratitude inscrib'd these lays,
Who lov'd her living, and laments her gone!
