Fragments: Drafts, Mostly or All for a Poem on a Heroic Theme

His armour glittered in the [ ]
but fear sat on his forehead, as when
the sun shoots his beams upon
the side of Skiddaw or Helvellyn
but mists sette upon his head

His crest nodded dreadful on
his head like an oak
shook by the wind upon
the top of Teneriff--
As when the moon as she
raises her orb above the Horizon
rests upon the Branches of some
tall Oak, which grows upon
the summit of the Horizon

Mighty was the warr[ior?],
dreadful was his countenance,
yet it was tempered with the
placid serenity of deliberate
courage, as when a sunbeam
gilds the top a rugged rock--
or when the sun skirts with gold
the top of some dark cloud--
They gaze upon each other
like two rocks which rise
from the sea in dreadful majesty
they stand unmoved while the
[waves?] dash at their feet, and
the Storm howls round their
heads.--
Stood like a tower which at
dusky Evening the shepherd
views enlarged and magnified
by the darkness.--

His consort is sad, the smile of
Joy forsakes her face, as when
the black shade of the earth interposes
betwixt the sun and Moon--

Before Winter is expired
He loved the fair Elfrida, but
her Sire denied the completion
of their happiness, as, when
The Spring reclines upon the
lap of the Youthful Year, the
hoary Winter rears his icy arm
and dashes her from his embrace.
Soft South wind, warm rain. Evening.
Sun breaks out. Verdure. Birds. All human
Nature rejoices.
Spring. While oft the west
wind roars & brings hail
and blackens all the vale
while short gleams of sunshine
burst forth & serve to divide
the showers. Ev'n then 'tis
sweet when perhaps at Eve the
storm has ceased, the wind
yet blowing amid the trees
And the sun shining while
the clouds scowl down the sky
to meditate. . . .
Turrita nubes, shaped like towers.
