Great Black-backed Gulls

Said Cap'n Morgan to Cap'n Kidd:
" Remember the grand times, Cap'n, when
The Jolly Roger flapped on the tropic breeze,
And we were the terrors of the Spanish Main?"
And Cap'n Kidd replied: " Aye when our restless souls
Were steeped in human flesh and bone;
But now we range the seven seas, and fight
For galley scraps that men throw overboard."

Two black-backed gulls, that perched
On a half-sunken spar —
Their eyes were gleaming-cold and through
The morning fog that crept upon the grey-green waves
Their wicked laughter sounded.
