Happiness
Not to be happy in our own conceit
Of faith, and truth, and well-remembered days
In breezy woods and empty, pastoral ways,
Where the brown waves of leaves Autumnal beat;
But more to wish that other souls may meet
And find their comrades in this earthly maze;
That men and women, like to us, will gaze,
Each in each other's eyes and find life sweet.
When you and I together silent wait
Not only do these thoughts of Thee and Me,
Knock at our hearts, as at an inner gate,
But through the wonder and the mystery,
Deep in our dreams we pray a kindly fate;
For lovers past, and lovers yet to be.
Of faith, and truth, and well-remembered days
In breezy woods and empty, pastoral ways,
Where the brown waves of leaves Autumnal beat;
But more to wish that other souls may meet
And find their comrades in this earthly maze;
That men and women, like to us, will gaze,
Each in each other's eyes and find life sweet.
When you and I together silent wait
Not only do these thoughts of Thee and Me,
Knock at our hearts, as at an inner gate,
But through the wonder and the mystery,
Deep in our dreams we pray a kindly fate;
For lovers past, and lovers yet to be.
