On Hearing that Opulent Relation of Mine Had Acted a Very Noble Part

To J.C.P. Esq.

Y ES , now , indeed, thy wealth 's confess'd ,
And few such treasure have possess'd;
The coin as brilliant as 'tis pure,
The heap from waste of time secure.
The heart of sterling ore is thine,
The vein is rich that feeds the mine,
Renews the current as it flows,
And still with radiant lustre glows.
The offer'd gift — the debt abjur'd, —
Are precious loans in Heaven ensur'd;
Their profit is the Angel's dream,
Joy at the heart, and self-esteem.
The feelings that can Heaven supply
Are gems that India cannot buy;
They are " above the scepter'd sway ,
And beams of a celestial ray.
