The Holly and the Ivy

The holly and the ivy
Are plants that are well known
Of all the trees that grow in the woods
The holly bears the crown.

The rising of the sun
And the running of the deer,
The playing of the merry organ,
Sweet singing in the choir.

Its head it points to heaven
And shows its berries red
In token of the drops of blood
Which on Calvary were shed.

And in the holly prickles
You can plainly see
The crown of thorns our Saviour wore
When going up to Calvary.

And although up in heaven
His love can still be seen
In the holly colour,
The everlasting green.
