How fearful tis when lightning fires

How fearful tis when lightning fires
The summer west as day retires
& grumbling thunders distant sound
Mutters when eve is glooming round
Blackning the twilight hues of even
& shutting out the earth from heaven
Like vengance with its deadly frown
Hurling its terrors thickly down
& thrusting its death grins between
Were fear remains & hope hath been.
