I Heard the Marvellous Music

I HEARD the marvellous music of the birds:
Another of the earth's ten million days
Was dawning. Down unnumbered woodland ways
And over meadows filled with voicing herds
It led its gorgeous revel. Waters gleamed
In the fresh morning light. But somberly
I went, because of an ill dream I'd dreamed,
And of an ill that had befallen me.
It was a day for lovers and for love.
One cloudless Blue stood dizzily above;
The curtains of eternity seemed withdrawn.
But though all life went high and glad and brave,
I found no wonder in the living dawn:
I had seen deep into a new-dug grave.
