I think I never felt before

I think I never felt before
The love I bear thee now
& wish Id shown my feelings more
My child could I know how
If thought could move the pain away
Id think the very wind
To calms that it might hurt thee not
& every thing unkind.

I think when on thy mothers knee
Thou smiled at little songs
Of ding dong bell & lullaby
Yet angui[s]h now belongs
To every thought—for rest & peace
Id give but knew not how
My kindness seems to trouble thee
& seams unkindness now.

Thy dollys things lie littered round
Undressed thy dolly lies
Trifles that make the many smile
Stir me with bitter sighs
I think & feel I love thee now
More tender then before
I think—& wish that I had felt
This tenderness before.
