I thought in my childhood how pleasant would be

I thought in my childhood how pleasant would be
The day when Life opened its portals for me
When I should leave home, and go wandering away
Out into sunshine and forth into day
Shut in from the world seemed Woods of the West
Silent and lonely & hidden from view

I would sit in a chamber for hours alone

I remember the time when years to come
Seemed brighter than those gone by
When I longed from my native woods & home
O'er the wide world to fly
My native woods seemed a pleasant spot
Sacred to calm and rest
But all who lived there were soon forgot
They never saw a guest

Wild fruits & flowers & flocks of birds
And green grass through all the year
And deer in the park in graceful herds
But nothing else came there

Life and marriage I have known
Things I dreamed of long ago
