On river's isle:
O virtuous maid,
Love he pursues.

Long and short play the weeds,
Left and right miss thee:
O virtuous maid,
Wake and sleep he seeks thee.

Seeks thee in vain,
Wake and sleep sad,
Long hours long hours,
Tossing insane.

Long and short play the weeds,
Left and right catch thee,
O virtuous maid,
May lute and string charm thee?

Long and short play the weeds,
Left and right hold thee,
O virtuous maid,
May bell and drum cheer thee?
