Lamp of the Lonely

I.

Lamp of the lonely!
Beautiful star!
Guiding the wanderer
Late and afar!
Light of the Lover —
The Sage — the Bard —
Thus I address thee —
My prayers regard!

II.

If my love's glances
Of exquisite power,
And tenderest softness,
Are on thee this hour,
Do thou, in thy kindness,
Thou canst, and not err —
Discover how fondly
My heart dwells with her!

III.

Be thy beams pages
Where she may read
All I have suffered,
Since fate decreed
Our bitter parting;
There let her see
How torn — yet faithful —
A heart may be!

IV.

Lamp of the lonely!
Beautiful star!
Guiding the wanderer
Late and afar!
Source of the Poet's
Loveliest dreams!
This let my own love
Read in thy beams.
