By the organ, up on the mezzanine,
we’ve fingered Clementi and Quantz, and tripped
over triplets against quavers. The priest,
busy, forgot to greet us as he promised.
Or perhaps he fobbed us off. A trucker
navigates the nave, burns a votive in
the semi-darkness. He calls up a
request for “Ave Maria,” and since
we know the score, we play it. One flute carries
the melody, the other a counterpoint
in staggered arpeggios –
an impromptu recital, music to ease not
the minds of the gridlocked and well-heeled
but a long haul of the heart at the wheel.
